In Carlsbad, the HVAC questions are often about replacement rather than breakdowns: an old furnace that's due, a home that has never had air conditioning, or a question about heat pumps. Fallbrook Heating & Air is a family-owned HVAC company based in Fallbrook since 1972, and Carlsbad sits at the southwest corner of our service area. We provide HVAC service in Carlsbad, including heat pump and AC installation, furnace and heating repair, and free estimates on central air.
What does Carlsbad's coastal climate mean for your HVAC choices?
Carlsbad's ocean breeze keeps summers mild and winters cool rather than cold, so most homes need modest heating for much of the year and cooling only on the warmest days. That balance often favors a heat pump, a single system that heats and cools. Near the beach, salt air also affects which equipment holds up and where it should sit.
Plenty of coastal North County homes were built without central air because, for years, they didn't need it. Late-summer heat waves and Santa Ana days are why many owners now consider adding it. The good news is that if your home already has a furnace and ductwork, adding cooling is usually a contained project.
Carlsbad isn't one climate, though. Homes in the west, near the village and the beaches, sit in the marine layer and get the most salt. Homes farther east, around La Costa and up toward the inland hills, warm up more in the afternoon and lean harder on cooling. We size equipment to the house and its exposure rather than to the ZIP code.
Heat pump, or AC with a gas furnace?
| Option | How it works | Often fits when |
|---|---|---|
| Heat pump | One outdoor unit cools in summer and runs in reverse to heat in winter | The furnace is old too, winters are mild, and you want one electric system |
| AC plus existing furnace | New outdoor AC and coil paired with a gas furnace that still has life left | The furnace is fairly new and you only want cooling |
| AC plus new furnace | Replace both; 80% or 96% efficient gas furnaces | You prefer gas heat and both pieces are near the end of their life |
Under California's 2025 Energy Code you are not required to switch to a heat pump when you replace an existing system, so this is a real choice. Running costs depend on SDG&E rates and how you use the house. Our heat pump vs furnace guide walks through the trade-offs, and the heat pumps page covers installation and repair.
A word on rebates: the federal 25C tax credit ended for equipment placed in service after December 31, 2025, and TECH Clean California's single-family incentives have been closed to new reservations since November 2025. SDG&E lists its current offers on its own site. Programs change, so we'll check current eligibility with you. Our rebates guide has the details.
Salt air and equipment placement
Within sight of the ocean, the outdoor unit takes the brunt of the salt. Where it sits (sheltered from direct onshore wind, clear of sprinkler spray, with room for airflow) affects how long its coil lasts. Gentle freshwater rinsing between service visits also helps. If you're replacing a system in west Carlsbad, ask us about placement as well as the equipment.

Who issues HVAC permits in Carlsbad?
The City of Carlsbad Building Division, part of the Community Development Department on Faraday Avenue, issues building and mechanical permits inside city limits. Many permit types can be applied for online through the city's online permit portal. Replacing or adding a heating or cooling system needs a permit, which we pull, along with the required inspection and Title 24 verification.
California's 2025 Energy Code requires duct sealing and verification by an independent ECC rater whenever an outdoor unit, furnace, coil or air handler is replaced, and additional verification can apply depending on equipment and climate zone. The city's own guidance is on its Building Division page.

Frequently asked questions
Is a heat pump a good choice for a Carlsbad home?
For many Carlsbad homes, yes. Winters are mild and summers are moderate near the coast, so one heat pump can handle both heating and the occasional hot spell. California doesn't require a heat pump when you replace an existing system, so we compare it honestly with an AC and gas furnace for your house.
Can I add central air to a Carlsbad home that never had it?
Often, yes. If the home already has a forced-air furnace and ducts, adding AC or swapping to a heat pump is usually simpler. Homes without ducts can often use a ductless mini-split instead. Either way it needs a City of Carlsbad permit, and the ducts must be sealed and tested under Title 24.
Who issues HVAC permits in Carlsbad?
The City of Carlsbad Building Division, part of Community Development, issues building and mechanical permits inside city limits, with online applications for eligible permit types through its online permit portal. A replacement or new system needs one. We pull the permit and coordinate the inspection and ECC verification.
